A really excellent picture to illustrate the two major stresses the naval architect has to deal with in design of the bow particularly a warship [as in this photo.]
The stresses are-panting where the pressure is to collapse the bow inwards, -pounding where the stress is upwards to bend the bow.
Nice photo this - not easy to capture with such clarity.
